Kuda Laut
The cheapest Mentawai option that we have come across!
Despite being the least expensive Mentawai option the Kuda Laut still has all the basics that a required for an epic surf trip. These include: 3 square meals a day plus snacks, water and other refreshments (including purcari sweat), a chef, an engineer, an experienced captain, an experienced surf guide, air conditioned bunk beds with DVD player and most importantly of all it still takes you from A to B surfing the same breaks as those who have easily paid double or triple the price. Surfing these waves on the Kuda Laut will undoubtly be up there with one of the best surfing experiences you are ever likely to get and it’s made all the sweeter when you take into account that it would have not been possible to do it any cheaper. All in All and great time and highly recommended.
Getting there!
You need to get to Padang to get on the boat.
Domestically:
Air Asia is a low cost domestic carrier that operates to and from Padang. There are several other domestic flyers which include Mandala and Garuda but overall we find Air Asia to be user friendly and cheap.
If flying from Bali to Padang there are limited direct flights so check other routes. i.e Bali – Jakarta – Padang or Bali – Medan – Padang, you will be bound to save money.
Staying in Padang.
Highly recommend the ‘spice homestay’ these guys are super friendly, cheap and extremely surfer friendly.
Internationally:
Most people fly to Bali and have a stop over either on the way to or from Padang. Bali has heaps of world class breaks, girls, t shirt vendors and pubs making for overall good times. However if you’re straight in and straight out of the mentawis then you can use Jakarta, Medan and Singapore as major stopovers. You can research the cheapest route depending on where you are coming from.
