The Mentawai islands lie about 100 kilometers off the West Coast of the Indonesian Island of Sumatera just south of the equator. There are four main islands: Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai and South Pagai along with countless smaller islands scattered throughout the archipelago. These islands are about as remote as you can get from Western civilization – rich in indigenous culture, and blessed with some of the most perfect waves the world has to offer.
The consistency of the surf in the Mentawai islands has to be seen to be believed, the magazines don’t do it justice!!
You come here for 10 days to surf and get barrelled and that’s what you will get. There are waves here to suit every level of surfing ability from a relatively soft wave to full on barrels

Getting there!
You need to get to Padang to get on the boat.
Upon arrival in Padang you will be met at the airport and taken to a local hotel to relax and unwind before departure in the evening. After everyone has arrived you will be taken to the boat and briefed on all safety aspects about the vessel and will travel over night so you can have barrels for breakfast.
Domestically:
Air Asia is a low cost domestic carrier that operates to and from Padang. There are several other domestic flyers which include Mandala and Garuda but overall we find Air Asia to be user friendly and cheap.
If flying from Bali to Padang there are limited direct flights so check other routes. i.e Bali – Jakarta – Padang or Bali – Medan – Padang, you will be bound to save money.
Staying in Padang.
Highly recommend the ‘spice homestay’ these guys are super friendly, cheap and extremely surfer friendly.
Internationally:
Most people fly to Bali and have a stop over either on the way to or from Padang. Bali has heaps of world class breaks, girls, t shirt vendors and pubs making for overall good times. However if you’re straight in and straight out of the mentawis then you can use Jakarta, Medan and Singapore as major stopovers. You can research the cheapest route depending on where you are coming from.
What is the cheapest/best way to get there? At present Air Asia are doing very cheap flights from OZ to Kuala lumpur, Mayalasia for as little as $99.00AUD each way , KL to Padang is about $40 USD. You can also travel direct from Auckland to Singapore or Auckland to Kuala Lumpur and then to Padang.

The boat is ideally suited for family, couples or smaller groups as the bed configuration is a double bed in the back cabin and in the front 2 cabins is a double and a single bed.
